Explaining Contradictory Reactions to Information Technology Implementation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Researchers have often been confronted with contradictory reactions to the implementation of a new technology within a single setting. For example, Walsham (2002) documents a technology transfer case that resulted in a variety of contradictory reactions including partial acceptance, outright resistance, and conflict, all within the same organization. The literature documents numerous situations where contradictory consequences of IT implementation were observed, either between studies or within the same study (Robey and Boudreau, 1999). In order to explain such contradictions, Robey and Boudreau recommend the adoption of a logic of opposition, which focuses on opposing forces that influence the outcomes of an implementation process. In this paper, we adopt Martin’s (1992) three-perspective theory of culture, which uses such a logic of opposition, to investigate a case where contradictory reactions to the implementation of a clinical information system (CIS) in a hospital occurred. Our research question is: ‘How do cultural interpretations of a new IT explain contradictory user reactions?’

Accounting for the Contradictory Organizational Consequences of Information Technology: Theoretical Directions and Methodological Implications
Although much contemporary thought considers advanced information technologies as either determinants or enablers of radical organizational change, empirical studies have revealed inconsistent findings to support the deterministic logic implicit in such arguments. This paper reviews the contradictory empirical findings both across studies and within studies, and proposes the use of theories emp...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Transfusion Reactions in the Thalassemia Patients before and after Implementation of the Hemovigilance System in Yazd Province, Iran
Background: Patients with thalassemia major require frequent blood transfusions. Blood transfusion can lead to the adverse reactions. Reporting and evaluating the transfusion reactions are among the goals of implementing the hemovigilance system to improve blood recipients’ safety. This study aimed to compare the transfusion reactions in the thalassemia patients before and after implementation ...
متن کاملReporting Adverse Drug Reactions With Emphasis on the Designing National Minimum Data Set
Objective: One of the most common causes of death is the adverse drug reactions. The volume and dispersion of information is one of the problems of information systems for registering unwanted adverse drug reactions. This study aims to design a National Minimum Dataset (NMDS) for reporting the unwanted adverse drug reactions. Methods: This descriptive-comparative study was conducted in Mashhad...
متن کاملAn Analysis of the Challenges of Green Information Technology Implementation in Hospitals and Treatment Centers

This study aimed to investigate the challenges of implementing green information technology in hospitals and treatment centers....
متن کاملStakeholder perspectives on relationship between factors affecting readiness for radio frequency identification implementation
Introduction: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a type of automatic identification technology which uses radio waves for collecting and transferring data. Due to extensive use in tracking and identifying people and objects, this technology has been able to solve many of the hospital's problems and help to increase the quality of delivery of services. The aim of this study was to survey t...
